Maine 16-and-under boys basketball squad wins opening game at AAU nationals

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky — Guard Tom Coyne of Falmouth scored 24 points Wednesday as the Maine-MBR 16-and-under boys basketball team won its opening game at the AAU Division I 10th-Grade National Championships.

Andrew Fleming of Oxford Hills of South Paris and Brendon McIntyre of Hampden Academy each added 17 points as the Maine team rallied from a one-point deficit at the end of the first quarter to defeat West Virginia 79-55.

MBR outscored West Virginia 28-10 in the second quarter to move out to a 39-22 halftime lead.

Hunter Smith of Foxcroft Academy in Dover-Foxcroft and Nick Chasse of Hampden Academy combined for 17 points in MBR’s pool play opener.

Other members of the team are Riley Robinson of Dirigo of Dixfield and Conary Moore and Jake Black of Hampden Academy. The team is coached by Rick Moore and Kevin Black.

MBR entered the tournament having compiled a spring record of 37-6, winning the Maine state championships to qualify for the nationals and then winning its age group at the New England AAU championships in Hartford, Connecticut.

The team was scheduled to resume pool play at the nationals at noon Thursday against Ohio.
