SANFORD, Maine — A report of an attempted abduction in York County on Tuesday turned out to be a hoax, Sanford police said Thursday.

On Tuesday, two 10-year-old girls told police a black van had pulled up beside them while they were walking on the corner of High and Bates streets, according to Sanford police Detective John Flewelling.

The girls also indicated to police that a man exited the vehicle and grabbed one of their shirts, Flewelling said.

During a follow-up investigation with the girls, both admitted to police the attempted abduction report had been fabricated, Flewelling said.

No charges have been filed in connection with the incident.
