Saco all-stars eliminate Bronco LL, to face Falmouth in Little League state final

BIDDEFORD — The Saco all-stars eliminated Bronco LL of Hampden 11-5 Wednesday to advance to the championship round of the Little League state baseball tourney for ages 11-12.

Saco will take on unbeaten Falmouth at 4 p.m. Thursday and needs to beat Falmouth twice to claim the title in the double-elimination tourney.

An if-necessary game would be held Friday. Falmouth needs one win to earn the state title and a trip to the regional finals in Bristol, Connecticut.

Wednesday’s game started well for Bronco LL as it reached two Saco pitchers for five

runs in the first inning.

Saco answered with three runs in its half of the inning.

Saco held Bronco scoreless for the game’s remainder and added seven runs in the second to take a 10-5 lead, highlighted by consecutive home runs by Kobe Gaudette, Ben Ham, and Grant Dow.

Saco’s last run came in the bottom of the fifth on a solo home run by Luke Ham.

Saco’s four home runs brings its total to 14 in four tourney games, and pushes the tourney total to 31 through nine games.

Dow finished with a single, double and home run for Saco while Gaudette, Luke Ham and Ben Ham each recorded a home run and single.

Cape Elizabeth wins state title

At Waldoboro, Anna Cornell held South Lewiston to four hits to lead Cape Elizabeth to a 9-1 victory in the Little League softball state championship for ages 9-10 Tuesday.

The effort capped a performance in which Cornell struck out 45 batters in three days.

In the final, she also contributed offensively with two singles. Abby Agrondia, Esme Song, Katherine Callahan, Katharine Blackburn and Kathryne Clay each added a single.

Gemma Landry, Skylar Gelinas, Sydney Roy and Bella Perryman each singled for South Lewiston. Landry struck out 36 batters in three tourney days.

In Tuesday’s earlier games, South Lewiston eliminated Biddeford 9-3 and Cape Elizabeth ousted Ellsworth 4-2.

In the first game, Gelinas paced South Lewiston with a triple and double while Emily Strachan added a double and single. Lauren Foster added two singles while Charlotte Cloutier and Abby Svor each had one.

Aliyah Bureau notched a double for Biddeford while Charlotte Donovan, Chantelle Bouchard, Laura Perreault, Anna Lavigne and Jayme Walton each added a single.

In the second game, Cornell picked up the pitching win for Cape Elizabeth and also contributed with a single and double. Agrondia and Clay each added a double.

Julia Perconti and Kaylee Morey each singled for Ellsworth.
