Maine U17 boys basketball team opens AAU nationals with victory

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky — Nick Mayo scored 23 points and grabbed 13 rebounds Wednesday as the Maine Athletic Club 17-and-under boys basketball team opened pool play at the AAU 11th-Grade National Championships with a 60-42 victory over the Georgia Magic.

Coach Carl Parker’s club plays again at 6:40 p.m. Thursday against Tennessee Glory and then will conclude pool play at 1:20 p.m. Friday against WCBA Blue of North Carolina.

Mayo, a 6-foot-7-inch forward who will be a senior at Messalonskee High School in Oakland this fall, scored 15 points and grabbed six rebounds in the first half as MAC built a 32-25 lead.

Ben Malloy of Bonny Eagle High School in Standish added 15 points and four rebounds for the Maine squad, while Houlton’s Kyle Bouchard had eight points, five rebounds and seven assists.

Chris Hudson of Hodgdon chipped in with seven points and five rebounds, while Falmouth’s Jack Simonds had five points and seven rebounds.
