Field hockey festival Saturday

The Maine Field Hockey Association’s annual Field Hockey Festival will be held Saturday at Thomas College in Waterville.

Thirty­-five teams will gather from around the state to play in a seven-on-seven round robin format.

Games begin at 8:30 a.m. and continue until 4 p.m. with a break at noon so the state’s best seniors can battle it out in the annual McNally East vs. West Senior All-Star Game.

Schools expected to participate are Lake Region of Naples, Winslow, Westbrook, Camden Hills of Rockport, Lisbon, Belfast, Foxcroft Academy, Gorham, Greely of Cumberland Center, Leavitt of Turner Center, Oceanside of Rockland-Thomastonn, Waterville, Skowhegan, Maranacook of Readfield, John Bapst of Bangor, Poland, Nokomis of Newport, Old Town, Winthrop, Scarborough, Cony of Augusta, Lawrence of Fairfield, Mount Ararat of Topsham, Messalonskee of Oakland, York, Mount View of Thorndike, Spruce Mountain of Jay-Livermore Falls, Thornton Academy of Saco, Brewer, Orono, Dexter and Hampden Academy.

UMFK to host summer fun run

FORT KENT — The University of Maine at Fort Kent will host a Summer Fun Run 5K race at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 2. Race-day registration will begin at 8 a.m. at the UMFK Sports Center and the first 100 people to register will receive a race T-shirt.

Registration is $20 with proceeds to benefit the Dylan R. Levesque Memorial Scholarship Fund. Racers will compete in four age groupings, under 18, 18-29, 30-44 and age 45 and older. Prizes will be awarded to the top male and female finishers in each division.

“Frozen” to be shown on new UM videoboard

ORONO — The new high-definition videoboard on Morse Field at Alfond Stadium on the campus of the University of Maine will be unveiled with a free public showing of the movie “Frozen” at 8 p.m. Wednesday.

The new HD videoboard was made possible thanks to a $800,000 gift from UMaine benefactors Phillip and Susan Morse. Phillip Morse, an owner and vice chair of the Boston Red Sox, and his wife, Susan Keene Morse, both graduated from UMaine in 1964. Their daughter, Katherine Morse, is a 1992 UMaine graduate. UMaine’s Morse Field in Alfond Stadium is named in their honor.

The new scoreboard, approximately 30 feet wide and 20 feet high, will include such features as HD video display and instant replay. The state-of-the-art technology also will provide the opportunity for enhanced fan interaction including live remote fan shots, video engagement, and posted tweets and texts.

Husson players honored

Four Husson University men’s basketball players were among 895 student-athletes named to the 2013-2014 National Association of Basketball Coaches Honors Court for their academic excellence.

Donte Cottonham, Phil Leighton, Dan Fleming and Matt Dube were recognized for achieving following criteria: academically a junior or senior and a varsity player with a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher at the conclusion of the 2013-14 academic year

As part of the 2013-14 Husson men’s basketball team, Cottonham, Leighton, Fleming, and Dube helped the team finish 26-3 and clinch their fourth North Atlantic Conference title in six years while advancing to the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Pats sign DL Manumaleuna

The New England Patriots signed rookie free agent defensive lineman Eathyn Manumaleuna and released rookie free agent defensive lineman Seali’i Epenesa, the team announced Monday.

Manumaleuna, 25, originally was signed by the New York Giants as a free agent out of Brigham Young on May 12. The 6-foot-2, 305-pounder was released by the Giants on June 19.

Manumaleuna played as a true freshman for BYU in 2007 and then served a two-year mission. He returned to the starting lineup in 2010. After suffering an injury early in the year as senior in 2010, he was granted a medical redshirt year after suffering an injury early in the year as a senior in 2012 and came back to start all 13 games in 2013. He finished his college career playing in 56 games and finishing with 143 total tackles and 5.5 sacks.

Epenesa, 22, was signed by the Patriots as a free agent out of UCLA on June 17. The 6-foot-1, 310-pounder played in 41 games and finished with 46 total tackles and one sack during his four-year college career. He played in 12 games with seven starts as a senior in 2013 and was credited with 16 tackles and one sack.
