BANGOR, Maine — Tom Burns recorded an eight-inning shutout to lift No. 5 Motor City by No. 4 Penquis 11-0 in the Zone 1 American Legion baseball play-in game Tuesday night at Husson University’s Winkin Complex.
Motor City (8-11) advanced to a first-round game at 7 p.m. Wednesday against No. 1 Bangor (16-2). Tourney action begins at 4 p.m. when No. 2 Trenton (13-5) takes on No. 3 Brewer (13-5).
Tyler Neville sparked Motor City’s victory with a three-run home run.
Penquis finished with a 9-10 record.
The Madison Junior 39’ers beat Innovative Workplace Solutions (Augusta) 8-6, the Gray-New Gloucester Post topped Yankee Ford (Cheverus) 7-4, Chase Custom Homes (Gorham) beat the Libby-Mitchell Post (Scarborough) 6-1 and the Lyman Eagles shut out the Fayette-Staples Post (Saco) 7-0 in play-in games of the Junior League state tourney Tuesday night.
Four more playoff games are set Wednesday with the winners advancing to three-game series on Saturday against top seeds South Portland, Bangor, Wells and Oxford Hills.

At Biddeford, the Saco All-Stars continued their relentless offensive attack in the state Little League baseball tournament, posting an 11-7 victory over Auburn Suburban Tuesday to remain in the hunt for the title in the ages 11-12 division.
Saco has scored 32 runs in three games while pounding out 10 home runs.
Auburn has been eliminated while Saco will play at 4 p.m. Wednesday
against Bronco LL of Hampden for a berth in the title game against Falmouth at 4 p.m. Thursday.
Saco wasted no time getting on the board as Kobe Gaudette drove the game’s third pitch over the wall for a 1-0 lead after one inning.
Saco scored two more runs in the second. Will Mitchell was hit by a pitch and Hayden Lehigh drew a walk and both scored on a Kobe Gaudette double and a throwing error.
Auburn answered in the second on a two-run homer by Jake Arel, scoring Bobby Tremaine, who had singled.
Saco added another run in the third when Calvin Christoforo led off with a homer. Saco tacked on three more runs in the fourth inning on singles by Jackson Cochrane, Pat Sawyer, Ben Ham, and a double by Kobe Gaudette to make it 7-2.
A lead-off home run by Auburn’s Joel Stubbs cut the lead to 7-3 after four.
Saco responded again in the fifth when Ethan Tsomidies doubled and came around on Ryan Penney’s single. Penney later scored on Pat Sawyer’s two-run homer.
Auburn battled in the fifth with Tremaine providing a two-run single and Saco scored its final run in the sixth on a throwing error.
Auburn plated two more runs in the sixth. A lead-off walk and singles by Nick Hartley, Austin Brown, and Ben Cassidy accounted for the run.
The five home runs hit in the game brings the total to 27 hit through the tourney’s first eight games.
Gaudettee finished with a home run and two doubles for Saco while Christoforo and Sawyer each notched a homer and single.
Brown, Cassidy, Tremaine and Hartley each notched two singles for Auburn.
