Maine hot air balloon hits power lines in Mass., explosion burns two

By Staff, CBS 13

CLINTON, Massachusetts — Federal Aviation Administration records show that a hot air balloon that hit power lines in Massachusetts over the weekend, injuring at least two, is registered to Derald Young, who operates Damn Yankee Balloons in Dixfield.

On Saturday, witnesses say the balloon was trying to land in a residential area in Clinton, which is north of Worcester.

The balloon hit some power lines, setting off an explosion. At least two were burned.

The balloon, named Raspberry Ripple, was scheduled to participate in the Great Falls Balloon Festival in Lewiston-Auburn next month.

According to our sister station WBZ in Boston, the balloon has had trouble in the past.

In 2012, the balloon got struck in a tree, and in 2010, it landed on the front lawn of a home.
