Maine squad reaches Louisville tourney semifinals

The Maine Athletic Club 17-and-under boys basketball team capped off a 4-1 weekend at the 32nd annual Eddie Ford Kentucky Hoopfest on Sunday by advancing to the event’s gold bracket semifinals.

The gold bracket competition was reserved for the 10 teams that won their individual pools during preliminary-round play of the 40-team tournament held at the Louisville Exposition Center in Louisville, Kentucky.

MAC won its gold bracket quarterfinal Saturday with a 55-41 victory over Metro Boston, as Nick Mayo of Messalonskee of Oakland scored 27 points and grabbed six rebounds and Houlton’s Kyle Bouchard contributed 10 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Chris Hudson of Hodgdon and Ben Malloy of Bonny Eagle of Standish each added six points and six rebounds to the victory.

Indiana Game then eliminated MAC on Sunday morning, rallying from a halftime deficit for a 55-50 victory.

Bouchard paced the Maine contingent with a team-high 28 points, while Mayo scored 12.

MAC earned its berth in the single-elimination gold bracket tournament Friday night by completing an undefeated run through pool play with a 67-48 victory over Fieldhouse Indiana of East Chicago, Indiana.

Mayo contributed 28 points and 11 rebounds to the victory, while Caribou’s Dayne Savage scored nine points, Jack Simonds of Falmouth had six points and five rebounds, Nason Lanphier of Winslow also scored six points and Bouchard added four points, five rebounds and six assists.

Other members of the MAC squad are Justin Martin of Winslow and Matt Murray of Cony of Augusta.

The MAC U17 team will play next in the AAU 11th Grade National Championships beginning Tuesday, also in Louisville, Kentucky.
