ROCKLAND, Maine — One person was taken to a local hospital following a two-car crash Sunday afternoon on Route 1.

The injury did not appear to be serious and the person was taken to Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport more as a precaution, said Rockland Police Sgt. Matthew Lindahl.

The crash occurred when a car with Maine license plates heading east on the Park Street section of Route 1 stopped to turn left onto Highland Street and a sport utility vehicle with Maine license plates slammed into the rear of the first vehicle.

The crash blocked that section of Route 1 for about a half hour.

The names of the people in the vehicles were not immediately available, Lindahal said.

He said the driver of the SUV that struck the vehicle was going to be issued a ticket for operating an unregistered vehicle.

The reason for the crash that occurred around 5 p.m. was not yet known.
