PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Officials with the Maine Warden Service have charged a Presque Isle man in connection with a May 11 drowning at Echo Lake that claimed the life of Jacob Caldwell, 19.

“Stephen Davenport, of 15 Pine Village Trailer Park, Presque Isle, was issued a summons for furnishing or allowing consumption of liquor by certain persons prohibited, as well as violation of condition of release,” said Alan Dudley, of the Maine Warden Service.

Davenport and Caldwell were with a third man when the incident occurred that resulted in Caldwell’s drowning. Authorities have not released his name.

“The call came into the Presque Isle Police Department and they notified us early Sunday morning that there’d been a boating accident at Echo. It occurred off the north shore. Three men were out in a 17-foot canoe when it capsized. Two of them — both 25 years old and from Presque Isle — were able to make it back to shore. The third man, Caldwell, also from Presque Isle, didn’t make it back,” said Lt. Tom Ward, of the Maine Warden Service.

Dudley said his department had to wait for test results to determine what, if anything, may have factored into Caldwell’s death. Results indicated that Caldwell, who was a minor, had alcohol in his system.

“The furnishing or allowing charge is a Class C crime, as it did cause the death of Jacob Caldwell,” said Dudley.

Davenport is scheduled to appear in Caribou Superior Court on Oct. 28.

“We’re working with the D.A.’s office. There’s a strong possibility more charges will be brought in the case,” said Ward.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to call the Maine Warden Service at 435-3231.
