AUGUSTA – David K. Crowell, 67, passed away at his home with his family by his side on Sunday, July 6, 2014. Diagnosed with cancer earlier in the year, he enjoyed an active role with his family until just recently. He was born in Portland, Aug. 8, 1946, the son of the late Ernest E. and Mary-Evelyn C. Kerr Crowell.

Dave earned his B.A. at Husson College and M.B.A. at UMO. He worked as credit manager for International Harvester, Office Manager for Associated Grocers of N.E. and was hired in 1978 by NorthCenter Foodservice as Controller/VP of Administration, promoted to Executive VP of Admin to then serving as President from 2003 to 2007. Serving over 32 years at PFG NorthCenter, it became another family to him. His specialty was coaching and mentoring people as they moved up through the ranks, many referred to him as “Uncle Dave”. He retired in 2009, devoting much of his time to creative gardening, refinishing some of his family antiques and all things that involved being creative and enjoying the outdoors and wildlife. He served on several boards including Capital Area Credit Union, Augusta Board of Trade, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Maine Merchants Workers Comp Trust, United Way of Kennebec Valley, American Cancer Society and the Kennebec Valley Chamber of Commerce.

Dave’s true passion was watching his grandchildren play at school and college sporting events. He also enjoyed spending time with family and friends “upta camp”. He was multi-talented and really got to show off some of his true talents during his retirement; anyone would envy the vegetable and flower gardens he grew. He recently accomplished rebuilding a Willie’s Jeep for all to use at camp for bird hunting and the like. A much unexpected gift from him was during the last few weeks he devoted his time to build a slide show of old photos for his closest family members as a gift from him.

Dave was predeceased by his wife of 36 years, Nancy (Hamill) Crowell. He is survived by his only child, daughter, Kirsten M. Crowell-Smith and her husband, Steven Smith, grandchildren, Jordan Crowell-Smith and Ashlee Crowell-Smith. Survivors include his sister, Maryann C. and her husband, Howard Flewelling of Arcadia, Florida; brother, Henry E. Crowell and wife, Eleanor of Venice, Fla.; nephew, Michael A. and wife, Elizabeth Flewelling, their son, Gregory and wife, Anne Flewelling; niece, Suzanne Flewelling and partner, Joseph Cusak; several other nieces and nephews including Dave’s Indiana Little Angels Emily and Madelyn, her son, Brandon Hutchins and fiancée, Anne Perkins, as well as his angels, Zacary and Akaya. His wife Nancy was served by mother, Billie M. Hamill and father, Gifford Hamill; siblings include Gifford and Christine Hamill, Danny and Linda Hamill, Jan and Tom Lucas, Billie and Dave Brazil, Stephen Victor Hamill, Jan and Tina Hamill, and many nieces and nephews.

A private family service will be held and a celebration of life to be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made towards a scholarship fund that is being arranged through Thomas College, 180 West River Road, Waterville, ME 04901. David truly enjoyed watching his granddaughter play basketball and other sport activities while attending Thomas College, but he also enjoyed seeing many other local students attend and work their way into the business community.
