Roof leak at Bangor’s Cohen School interrupts summer programs

By Nick McCrea, BDN Staff

BANGOR, Maine — Heavy, persistent rain in Bangor resulted in a significant roof leak at the William S. Cohen School Wednesday morning, prompting kids participating in summer programs at the facility to be sent home early.

Principal Gary Gonyar said Wednesday afternoon that a portion of the ceiling in a stairwell collapsed after a drainpipe on the roof backed up.

As water collected, the roof failed, flooding the stairwell and portions of the first and second floors in the section of the building that was constructed in 1990.

School maintenance crews will assess and try to contain the damage at the middle school Wednesday. Repairs are expected to begin once the rain lets up.

Gonyar said the summer programs would resume Thursday in the dry sections of the building.
