MERRILL, Maine — A Merrill man was taken into custody on Tuesday evening several days after the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency worked to dismantle a suspected methamphetamine lab at a home he was renting at 233 Clark Road, which is about 20 miles west of Houlton in Aroostook County.

Micah Lawlor, 38, was arrested on a charge of trafficking in methamphetamine after deputies from the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Department and Maine State Police went back to Clark Road in Merrill on Tuesday afternoon and tracked Lawlor with a state police canine, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

Investigators began processing the scene on July 10 for evidence that the drug was being manufactured at the site.

For the past month, agents reportedly have been investigating the manufacturing and distribution of methamphetamine at the residence. Agents were able to conduct undercover purchases of methamphetamine from the home and returned with a search warrant, according to Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland.

Because of the extremely toxic and explosive nature of methamphetamine manufacturing, MDEA’s lab team was activated. Specially trained agents from around the state, along with a chemist, dismantled 24 separate devices from inside the home where the drug allegedly was concocted. The agents reportedly retained samples of a variety of items, including muriatic acid, Coleman stove fuel and lithium strips.

The MDEA was being assisted by the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Department, Maine State Police, U.S. Border Patrol, Oakfield Fire Department and Maine Department of Environmental Protection.

McCausland said that Lawlor was renting the residence.

Discovery of the alleged lab was the 15th methamphetamine-related incident this year in Maine. There were 20 in 2013, according to McCausland.
