Harrington man injured in fire that destroys garage

HARRINGTON, Maine — A local resident was injured Sunday in a fire that destroyed a garage and a camper parked alongside it on Mill River Road, according to the local fire chief.

Harrington Fire Chief David Baldwin declined to comment on how the homeowner, Joe Small, was hurt or how severe his injuries may be. He said Small was taken by ambulance from the fire scene to Down East Community Hospital in Machias.

Information about Small’s medical condition was unavailable Sunday. A voicemail message left at the Machias hospital about Small was not returned, and attempts to contact Small or his family were unsuccessful.

Baldwin said the fire was reported by a passerby sometime between 11:30 a.m. and noon Sunday. He said firefighters responded quickly but that the garage had been damaged beyond repair before the call came in.

“It was already [burnt] down, pretty much,” Baldwin said.

He said the cause of the fire has not been determined. The State Fire Marshal’s Office has been contacted and was expected to send an investigator to the scene, he added.

Baldwin said he did not know if the garage or camper were insured. He said that, as far as he knew, there were no vehicles parked inside the garage.

The fire chief said that approximately 18 firefighters from Harrington, Addison, Columbia, Columbia Falls and Milbridge helped put out the flames.
