Bangor, Bronco all-stars to battle for berth in Senior League final


BANGOR, Maine — Bangor advanced to a winners bracket showdown against Bronco while Old Town survived in the elimination round in the District 3 Senior League all-star baseball tourney at Mansfield Stadium Friday night.

Bangor beat Brewer 8-3 and Old Town eliminated Holbrook 6-0, setting up Saturday’s games when Bangor will take on Bronco of Hampden/Hermon at noon, followed by Brewer against Old Town at 3 p.m. in an elimination game.

The loser of the first game and winner of the second will battle in another elimination game at 6:30 p.m., with that winner moving on to the Sunday’s 4:30 p.m. championship round against the Bronco-Bangor winner.

The District 3 champ earns a berth in the Senior League World Series on Aug. 10-16 at Mansfield Stadium.

In Friday’s first game, Bangor erupted for four runs in the top of the fifth, breaking a 3-3 tie as Trevor DeLaite doubled, Ben Crichton notched an RBI single and Nick Cowperthwaite added a two-run single.

Cowperthwaite also earned the pitching victory, while James Prescott came on to pitch the final three innings, allowing one hit, not issuing a walk and striking out eight.

Kyle Stevenson chipped in with a double and single for Bangor while DeLaite also added an RBI triple. Ben Crichton contributed two singles and three RBIs and Cowperthwaite finished with two singles.

Matt Pushard and Tyler Friel each doubled for Brewer.

In the nightcap, Kaleb Gifford earned the win for Old Town as he pitched six shutout innings, allowing two hits and four walks while striking out eight.

Cole Daniel sparked the Old Town offense with three singles and two RBIs. T.J. Crawford and Austin Sheehan each added two singles, with Crawford driving in two runs.

Alex Maxsimic singled twice for Holbrook.

Brewer, Bronco win

At Bangor, Brewer beat Holbrook 7-3 and Bronco defeated Old Town 19-6 in the opening round of the District 3 Senior League all-star baseball tourney Thursday night at Mansfield Stadium.

In Thursday night’s first game, Alex Brooks’ RBI double highlighted Brewer’s four-run fifth inning to rally from a one-run deficit en route to the win.

Logan Rogerson earned the pitching win with two shutout innings, allowing one hit and striking out two.

Jack Corey sparked Brewer with three singles and an RBI while Jon Wheaton added a double and single.

Tyler Williams doubled for Holbrook.

In the nightcap, Eric Hoogterp recorded three singles and three RBIs and Cam Scott added a double and five RBIs to highlight Bronco’s 12-hit attack. Jordan Dysart chipped in with a double and single and Matt Leach added three singles.

T.J. Crawford notched an RBI single for Old Town.

Bronco 14, Holbrook 6

At Kedderis Field in Millinocket, Bronco Little League won its fifth-straight elimination game to claim a spot in the championship round of the District 3 9 and 10-year old all-star tournament Friday at Kedderis Field.

Bronco rallied from an early 3-0 deficit and built a 5-4 edge midway through the contest before striking for six runs in the bottom of the fourth to break the game open en route to the win. Jacob Lorenzo recorded three hits, two singles and a three-run inside-the-park home run, to lead Bronco’s 13-hit attack.

Michael Delahanty added a solo inside-the-park home run to go along with a single while Jagger Thayer singled and tripled. Max Polo collected two singles for the winners in support of Lorenzo, who was the winning pitcher, coming on in relief during the first inning and pitching through the fifth inning.

Jordan Moulton singled and doubled to pace Holbrook with Rowan Valley notching two singles.

Bronco will take on Hermon (4-0) in the championship round for the right to represent District 3 at the state tournament next weekend hosted by Auburn Suburban. The two sides will square off Sunday at 5 p.m., and a Bronco win will force an if necessary game Monday at 5 p.m.

Shaker Valley 7, Hermon 1

At Hermon, Grace Tutt struck out 10 to help Shaker Valley record the victory in the elimination round of the state Little League softball tourney for ages 11-12

Lasey Bean recorded a triple and an RBI to spark Shaker Valley of Waterboro/Limerick while Abby Pomerleau and Brianne Basterache each chipped in with a single and two RBIs.

Megan Chamberlain singled twice and scored Hermon’s run. Madison Brown added a double while Bri Oakes and Cloe Woodard each had a single. Pitcher Olivia Albert struck out nine in five innings.
