NORTHEAST HARBOR – Cheryl Lee Bestford, 69, of Northeast Harbor, passed away on May 24, 2014 surrounded by friends and family. Cheryl was born in Kearny, NJ, April 2, 1945.
After graduating from Willingboro High School and a brief stint at an insurance agency, she moved to San Francisco and worked as an office administrator. Cheryl realized how much she loved to travel, and set off on her first adventure, backpacking across England. Cheryl first came to Bar Harbor by boat- as soon as she saw the town; she knew she was “home.” Mount Desert Island was her home for over 30 years. Cheryl worked in the shipping department of the Kimball Shop in Northeast Harbor for 15 years before retiring in February. And she made many friends when she worked the mail boat that runs from Northeast Harbor to the Cranberry Isles.
Cheryl enjoyed playing tennis, reading (especially mysteries), swimming, gardening (gorgeous flowers), cooking, garage sales, music and dancing. And she had an impish sense of humor. She loved animals, and cared for many of her friends’ and neighbors’ dogs and cats in addition to her own. She loved picnics on the beach and hiking, especially at Little Long Pond. Cheryl enjoyed spending time at her aunt and uncle’s cottage on Pemaquid Pond in Nobleboro, Maine and visiting friends in San Francisco. It seems that wherever she went she connected with people from every walk of life. Cheryl was well loved, and lived her life with integrity and courage.
Cheryl is survived by sisters, MaryAnn Bestford, Geraldine Davison, Lorraine Augustine, and brothers, Anthony and Joseph Augustine, along with aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, her cat, Dolly and many, many friends. Cheryl was preceded in death by her parents, Addison Bestford and Florence Augustine; as well as her brothers, William Bestford and Victor Augustine.
Donations in Cheryl’s memory to the SPCA of Hancock County, Trenton or Ark Animal Shelter, Cherryfield are welcomed. Arrangements made by Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Homes, Ellsworth.
