BANGOR, Maine — The Cross Insurance Center will soon have a new marquee which will be installed on Main Street next to the multipurpose arena, the city and the facility’s management company announced Wednesday. The new sign is a donation from the Cross family, which purchased naming rights to the facility in 2012.

Construction of the marquee has begun and is expected to be finished by the end of July, with a special dedication and unveiling ceremony that will be announced at a later date.

The blue marquee will be approximately 10 feet wide at the base and just over 20 feet tall and will stand in front of the facility at the intersection of Dutton and Main streets. The sign’s design complies with all city ordinances regarding zoning and lighting, according to Bangor Code Enforcement officer Brenda Bilotta.

The sign will also feature a 5-foot-tall digital screen that will help promote upcoming events. Cross Insurance Center Director of Marketing and Communications Tiffany Sun said she hopes that the sign will provide new marketing possibilities.

“We’re excited to get [the marquee] into place. It’ll definitely help [with promotion], it’s going to be fun,” Sun said.

Cross Insurance Center General Manager Joe Imbriaco said the sign’s location will add greater visibility and marketing value to the facility. The $65 million arena opened in 2013.

“The generous donation of the marquee, made by the Cross family, will allow us to better share the information about events taking place within our facility to those passing by on Main Street.” Imbriaco said in a prepared statement.

“I want to take this opportunity to thank all our city officials, councilors and the promoters for helping make Cross Insurance Center a successful bright spot in the great state of Maine,” said Cross Insurance Founder Woodrow W. Cross in a prepared statement.

Bangor City Council Chairman Ben Sprague said the new sign will be a boon for business at the Cross Insurance Center.

“It’s going to be a welcome addition. Right now there’s nothing there and nobody really knows what’s going on. [People] drive by and see a lot of cars but may not know what’s going on and now people [will be] informed of what’s going on inside.” Sprague said.

“It’s a great thing that the Cross family did, donating [it] like that,” he said.

Cross Insurance recently purchased naming rights to the former Cumberland County Civic Center in Portland for $2.5 million.
