Brewer rec offers summer fun

BREWER — During summer vacation, kids just want to have fun. Brewer Parks and Recreation Department has a menu of activities available that will keep children engaged and on the go until school starts again in September.

Offerings for children of all ages include individual activities, summer sports and fitness, swimming lessons and special events.

Special events are a popular offering, said Ken Hanscomb, director of Brewer Parks and Recreation.

The special events schedule is:

• Life … Be In It! for children ages 6 to 12, 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Friday, July 11. Non-competitive games, homemade soap slide, lunch of hot dogs, chips and beverage provided. $10 Brewer residents, $18 others.

• Teddy Bear Picnic for children ages 3 to 5, 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday, July 16. Bring a teddy bear to lunch at the Brewer Auditorium. Teddy bear parade and visits with Tookie the Bear. Stories, games, peanut butter and jelly sandwich lunch. Free.

• Peaks-Kenny State Park trip for children ages 6 to 13, 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday, July 18. $17 Brewer residents, $24 others. Bring a lunch, swimsuit, towel, sunscreen and clothing appropriate for the weather.

• Dino Discovery Day for children ages 4 to 6, 1:30-3 p.m. Thursday, July 24, Brewer Auditorium. Fossil hunts, dinocrafts and Jurassic fun. $5 Brewer residents, $8 others.

• Summer Carnival Day for children ages 6 to 12, 9:30 a.m.-noon Friday, Aug. 1. Face painting, ring toss games, sack races, lemonade, treats and more. $10 Brewer residents, $18 others

• Luau and Beach Party for children ages 5 to 12, 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 8. Participants should attend the party dressed for the beach. Games, water fun, lunch. $10 Brewer residents, $18 others.

• Mini Mad Scientist for children ages 4 to 6, 1:30-3 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13. Make goopy messes and learn about nature, science and the world. $5 Brewer residents, $8 others.

Swim lessons, session 2, will take place July 22-Aug. 15. The cost is $12 for the session to Brewer residents, $24 per session others.
