Outlaw race to rally community at Unity Raceway on Saturday night

Posted July 04, 2014, at 11:32 a.m.

Unity Raceway is still closed for most of the season, but the first of three race cards will take place at 8 p.m. Saturday.

The highlight will be a 50-lap Outlaw race.

There will also be two four-cylinder divisions, street stocks, wildcats, enduros and Wicked Good vintage cars, along with the fantasy vintage league.

A display of street rod cars, antique cars and motorcycles will he held in the parking lot.

“It’s going to be a nice deal,” track owner Ralph Nason said. “There are all kinds of people who have stopped racing for one reason or another, and here’s a chance for them to come out and have some fun.”

He said the Outlaw cars must have 1,450 pounds of weight on the right side, and they need to race on 8-inch American Racer tires. And they can’t have a spoiler any higher than the roof.

There will be fireworks after the racing.

People with a street rod club card or motorcyclists with helmets in their hands will be admitted to the races for half-price, or $5.

Nason is still trying to lease or sell Unity Raceway.

Jere Humphrey leased it last year, but he and Nason parted ways after the season.

There will be racing at several other tracks, also.

Fort Kent’s Austin Theriault will run in the Pro All-Stars Series Super Late Model North race, the Southern Maine Motors Firecracker 150, at Scarborough’s Beech Ridge Motor Speedway at 7 p.m. Saturday.

The PASS Modifieds will also race.

It will be Theriault’s last race before he jumps into a Nationwide Series car for JR Motorsports the following Saturday at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

Theriault signed a three-race deal with JR Motorsports and finished 15th in his first race at Iowa Speedway in May. JR Motorsports is owned by Dale Earnhardt Jr. and his family.

Hermon’s Speedway 95 and Wiscasset Speedway will have racing Saturday at 7 p.m. and 6 p.m., respectively, and Oxford Plains Speedway will have Motor Mayhem No. 2 on Sunday at 6.

Winterport Dragway will also race on Sunday with time trials at 8:30 a.m. and elimination heats beginning at 12:30 p.m.

Spud Speedway in Caribou was set to race Thursday night.
