RIPLEY, Maine — A Skowhegan man was injured Tuesday morning when his motorcycle struck a deer on Route 23 in Ripley, police said.

Linwood Willey, 54, was headed to work around 5:30 a.m. at the time of the accident, according to Chief Deputy Dale Lancaster of the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office.

The deer, a small fawn, ran out in front of Willey, whose eyes were apparently blocked by the sun, Lancaster said.

He added that Willey’s helmet split on impact.

Willey was taken by LifeFlight helicopter to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor with injuries that were considered serious but not life-threatening, Lancaster said.

He noted that speed and alcohol weren’t considered factors, and Willey’s Yamaha motorcycle was demolished.
