Eight UMaine athletes earn top America East academic honors

Eight University of Maine Black Bears have been named inaugural America East Presidential Scholar-Athletes.

The award recognizes graduating student-athletes who compiled a cumulative GPA of 3.75 or higher as an undergraduate student.

Maine had the second most student-athletes in the conference honored with eight. The University of Hartford led the way with 11.

The women’s track and field team had four student-athletes honored, while women’s soccer placed three student-athletes on the list. Men’s track and field had the other recipient.

UMaine athletes named to the team were: women’s track and field — Monique Boutin (3.88 GPA), Ashten Hackett (3.77), Darien Lewis (3.78), Rachel Wilkinson (3.99); women’s soccer — Lisa Bijman (3.91), Meaghan Bradica (3.98), Hallie Lipinski (3.77); and men’s cross country/track: Kelton Cullenberg (3.92).

In addition to registering a 3.75 grade point average for their college career, honored student-athletes must have received their undergraduate degree in the academic year they are honored and have attended their institution for a minimum of two years.

UMaine hockey players receive league academic honors

Sixteen UMaine men’s hockey players and 20 women’s hockey players have been named to their respective Hockey East All-Academic Teams.

Rookie Eric Schurhamer was named to the Hockey East Academic All-Star Team, which honors the top grade point averages by position, while Brice O’Connor and Jon Swavely were named Distinguished Scholars for having been named to the All-Academic Team in each of their four years at Maine.

Schurhamer was named to the Hockey East Academic All-Star Team at defense, as he posted a 3.96 GPA.

Andrew Cerretani and Connor Leen were honored for the third time in their careers while Will Merchant, Conor Riley, Jake Rutt, Devin Shore, Steven Swavely and Kyle Williams were honored for the second time.

Cam Brown, Brady Campbell, Stu Higgins, Brian Morgan and Dan Renouf all were recognized for the first time.

The UMaine women’s team led all league schools with 20 student-athletes named while Katy Massey was named one of three Hockey East Top Scholar Athletes. It is the third straight season that she has earned the honor with a perfect 4.0 GPA. She was joined this season by teammate Brianne Kilgour, who also earned a perfect 4.0 GPA this year.

Massey and Kilgour were named to the league’s Academic All-Star Team as forwards.

Twenty of the 26 student-athletes on Maine’s roster received recognition.

Kayla Kaluzny and Kelly McDonald were named Distinguished Scholars for posting a 3.0 grade point average in each semester the past four years.

Kilgour and Massey each were honored for the third time in their careers.

Abbey Cook, Jessica Hall, Brittany Huneke, Brooklyn Langlois, Jillian Langtry, Kelsey MacSorley, Jennifer More, Tori Pasquariello and Audra Richards all were recognized for the second time in their careers.

Eve Boissonneault, Emilie Brigham, Hailey Browne, Mariah Fujimagari, Karissa Kirkup, Morgan Sakundiak and Jessica Vallotton all were named to the team for the first time.
