Katahdin Valley opens all-star baseball tourney with victory over Millinocket

MILLINOCKET — Katahdin Valley opened the District 3 Little League all-star baseball tourney for ages 11-12 with an 8-3 victory over Millinocket Tuesday as three hurlers combined on a two-hitter at Kedderis Field.

Bradley Hotham worked the first 5 1/3 innings on the mound yielding just one hit while striking out 11. Blake Howes and Logan Swallow came on to record the final outs to preserve the victory for Katahdin Valley.

Offensively, Howse singled twice to lead the winners while Gavin Vining tripled.

For Millinocket, Caleb York doubled and Riley Gardner singled for their team’s lone hits.

Katahdin Valley (1-0) advances in the winners bracket of the double-elimination tournament and will travel to Holbrook on Wednesday. Millinocket (0-1) will next play Monday in an elimination game.

LL Softball

D3 All-Stars, 11-12

At Houlton, Hampden has recorded two victories in the opening rounds of the District 3 Little League softball all-star tourney for ages 11-12.

Hampden beat Lincoln 14-2 on Tuesday and host Houlton 15-4 on Sunday. Hermon notched a 7-2 win over Hampden on Monday.

In Tuesday’s game, winning pitcher Natalie Sicard aided her own cause with a double and two singles to spark Hampden. Molly McCluskey chipped in with three singles.

Laine McKechnie singled for Lincoln.

On Monday, Hermon’s Breanna Oakes tripled and doubled to back up winning pitcher Olivia Albert, who contributed a triple and single. Delaney Helpler added a double and single. Sicard singled for Hampden.

On Sunday, Sicard notched her first win of the tourney, striking out 16, and also contributed with a double and two singles. McCluskey chipped in with three singles while Camryn Bouchard and Emilee Ouellette each added two singles. Abby Wathley double and singled twice for Houlton.

Legion Baseball

Brewer 2, Hampden 0

At Heddericg Field in Brewer, Kyle Alexander scattered eight hits and struck out nine to help Brewer shut out Hampden, 2-0 in Zone 1 American Legion action Monday night.

Brendan Moore sparked Brewer (1-1) with a home run and single and Chase Allen added a single and RBI.

Mike Turner recorded a single and double for Hampden (1-1) and Jackson Gilmore singled twice. Nick Guerette, who struck out eight, was the hard-luck losing pitcher.

Motor City 8, Waldo 1

At Husson University on Monday night, Jackson Coutts pitched a complete game with nine strikeouts to lead Motor City by Waldo.

Coutts also contributed three hits, two runs and two RBIs. Tyler Neville also had three hits, including a double. Christian Mowrer added two hits and a run.

Zach Collier paced Waldo with three singles.

Junior Legion

Bangor 5, Gray-NG 2

At the Gray-New Gloucester High School field, Nick Cowperthwaite scattered eight hits over seven innings while not walking a batter and striking out five to propel Bangor to the victory.

Derek Fourier tripled, singled and drove in two runs to spark Bangor while Tanner Goodine doubled and notched an RBI.

Tyler St. Pierre tripled and singled for Gray-NG while Evan Plummer and Sam Blaisdell each drove in a run.
