Motorcycle-truck collision in Thorndike sends two to hospital, one in critical condition

By Abigail Curtis, BDN Staff

THORNDIKE, Maine — A Waldo County couple suffered serious injuries Saturday when their motorcycle collided with a pickup truck on Unity Road in Thorndike.

Walter Thompson, 38, of Knox, was riding the motorcycle with his wife, Cassandra Thompson, 30, as his passenger. They were behind a pickup truck operated by Meaghan White, 18, of Newburgh, which stopped abruptly and started to turn around in a driveway, according to Trooper Sarah Ferland of the Maine State Police.

“As she stopped to turn, they collided,” Ferland said Monday.

Cassandra Thompson, whose most severe injury was head trauma, was taken from the scene by LifeFlight helicopter to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. She was listed in critical condition Monday afternoon, according to a hospital employee. Her husband suffered serious leg injuries in the accident and was taken by ambulance to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, where he was listed in fair condition Monday.

Neither of the Thompsons was wearing a helmet, the trooper said.

White, the driver of the pickup truck, was not injured but was taken from the scene to be treated for shock.

“It was pretty horrific,” Ferland said.

White’s passenger made the emergency call to report the crash. In addition to Maine State Police, the Thorndike Volunteer Fire Department, the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office, the Montville Fire Department and Unity Ambulance assisted at the scene.

The incident remains under investigation, but Ferland said it is unlikely that charges will be filed.

“Technically, [White] wasn’t at fault. She did brake suddenly, but she had her blinker on,” the trooper said, adding that she hopes drivers will pay attention and keep an eye out with more motorcyclists on the road.

“But motorcyclists must be cognizant of the fact that they need to be careful, too,” she said.
