BANGOR – Sally Ann Riopelle (married names Smith, Campbell, Ambrose, Shaw, Francis), 77, passed away June 16, 2014, in Bangor after several months of declining health. An identical twin, Sally was born January 16, 1937, in Salem Depot, N.H., daughter of George Andrew Riopelle and Ruth Knowlton Pickard.
She moved to Maine as a child and lived most of her life in the Bangor area, aside from several years in Georgia when she was married to Marvin Smith. Sally found her true calling as an in-home care provider for the elderly. Compassionate and capable, she was a natural at this, and at one time, she took care of two sisters, both over 100 years old.
Sally was an avid reader and enjoyed poetry. Despite health issues, she found joy in life, saying often that she was happy and had everything she wanted. She had enormous resilience and an endless ability to always look for the good. She enjoyed living on Indian Island while married to Leo Francis, and she enjoyed her neighbors in Old Town, where she lived until 2012.
Sally was pre-deceased by her parents; sister, Charlene Shea; sons, Mark and Gregory; special aunt Hazel Pickard; and longtime companion, Stanley Albert.
Survivors include her twin, Betsey Jane Roche, Sarasota, FL; sister, Georgianna Pease, Key Largo, FL; her devoted children, Wanda Ambrose, Bangor; Barbara Porter and husband Keith, Worthington, MA; James Ambrose and wife Michelle, Freeport, ME; Olin Smith and wife Kate, Alexandria, VA; and Robert Smith, Bangor; grandchildren Mathew Cyr and wife Kim, Jenny Cyr, Aaron Porter and wife Danny, Beau Porter, Rozalind Smith, Justin Ambrose and partner Shannon, Douglas Morris, Sydney and Nova Ambrose; great grandchildren Mercede and Brooklyn Ambrose, and Boston Porter.
A celebration of Sally’s life will be scheduled later this summer.
