ORRINGTON — The seventh annual Lion of Judah football Camps organized by Mike Karnas and his staff will open Monday, July 7, with a Youth Day Camp at Calvary Chapel School in Orrington. The camp is open to boys age 8 to 12.

Karnas said the NFL’s Junior Player Development Program for Maine takes the best football drills designed for youth by the late Bill Walsh of the San Francisco 49ers, and combines them with moral and spiritual teachings from the Bible.

Campers can expect to learn about American football and some fundamentals about Jesus Christ tol help them play more effectively and confidently, Karnas said in a press release.

The camp is designed for first time and experienced youth players. Particular attention will be

given to correct tackling techniques and safety. All equipment is provided.

The five-day camp also will feature a scrimmage and-or an officiated game every day. Players will demonstrate their newly learned techniques in drills with players of their own age, weight and ability, and later in the day, play a game on their own team.

Evangelism and American football are not new partners, Karnas said. The early YMCA Movement in Springfield, Massachusetts, he said, used American football in the fall and basketball in the winter months to develop the body (for reasonable service to God) and the Bible to develop a young man’s intellect and soul, the famous Body Mind Spirit triangle.

Karnas said The Lion of Judah football camps are well developed fundamentally in teaching the skills necessary for young players to be safe and have fun and is especially interested in those players who would join leagues later in the fall.

The Lion of Judah Football Camp is the only tackle football camp of its kind in New England, Karnas said.

Surprise speakers from the football and faith communities also participate, Karnas said. Former speakers have been University of Maine Black Bear football coach Jack Cosgrove, Husson College football coach Gabby Price and former secret service agent, pastor, and player from the movie, “Remember the Titans,” John Leber.
