Middleweight fight for Bangor UFC show features ‘Ultimate Fighter’ cast member

By Ernie Clark, BDN Staff

BANGOR, Maine — A third bout has been announced for the UFC Fight Night mixed martial arts card scheduled for Aug. 16 at the Cross Insurance Center.

“Smilin” Sam Alvey, a recent Ultimate Fighting Championship signee who had been the reigning Maximum Fighting Championship middleweight title holder, will take on Tom “Kong” Watson in a three-round bout.

Alvey, a 28-year-old Wisconsin native, was a cast member on “The Ultimate Fighter” television series in 2012, splitting two bouts while competing as a welterweight. Alvey is 23-5 with one no contest overall in his career and is coming off four consecutive victories — the most recent, a three-round decision over Gerald Meerschaert on May 31 in Milwaukee.

Watson, a native of Southampton, England, is 16-7 overall but just 1-3 in the UFC. He’s coming off a split-decision loss to Nick Catone at UFC 169 on Feb. 1 in Newark, New Jersey. Catone (10-4) owns a 2011 win over ninth-ranked UFC middleweight Costas Philippou.

The Alvey-Watson bout joins two other fights previously announced for the UFC’s debut in Maine, a card developed in large part because of UFC president Dana White’s connections to the Bangor area. White is a 1987 graduate of Hermon High School and owns a home in Levant that he and his family visit several times each year.

Lincolnville native Tim “The Barbarian” Boetch, ranked 13th in the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s middleweight division with a 17-7 record, has made a verbal commitment to fight 14th-ranked Brad Tavares (12-3), while Jack “The Outlaw” May (7-1) and Shawn “The Savage” Jordan (15-6) are slated for a heavyweight clash.

The card’s main event has not yet been announced.

Tickets for the Bangor show are slated to be available beginning Friday.
