HERMON, Maine — A Carmel woman has died in a head-on crash on Route 2 near the Carmel-Hermon town line, and two others have been sent to area hospitals with serious injuries, according to Deputy Chief Troy Morton of the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office.
A Jeep SUV traveling on Route 2 in Carmel heading toward Bangor at about 5:40 p.m. lost control, crossed the centerline and slammed head-on into an oncoming Ford car just after passing into Hermon, Morton said.
“The lone occupant in the Ford sedan was killed,” the deputy chief said.
The deceased is a Carmel woman, who is approximately age 54, he said. The driver and a passenger in the Jeep were taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center and St. Joseph Hospital in Bangor with serious injuries, Morton said.
“We’re not going to be releasing any of the names yet, pending notification,” the deputy chief said. “Everybody’s local. I don‘t have an updated status of their conditions at this point.”
Route 2 was temporarily closed to traffic for the investigation led by Sgt. Jamie Kennedy. Maine State Police. Firefighters and rescue crew members from Hermon, Carmel and Levant also arrived to assist.
“The accident is being reconstructed at this time by the sheriff’s office,” the deputy chief said around 9 p.m.
“We don’t have any indication of what went wrong,” Morton said. “We know from a witness that was following the Jeep that it lost control and crossed the centerline.”
