BERWICK, Maine — Police are looking for two people who led officers on a high-speed chase between two states early Friday before crashing on Guinea Road and disappearing into nearby woods.

The chase began in South Berwick at about 2:56 a.m. Friday when police tried to pull over a 1978 Chevrolet Camaro on Portland Street for tail light violations, South Berwick Police Chief Dana Lajoie said. The driver failed to stop and led police north on Route 236 and across New Dam Road into Somersworth, New Hampshire.

The car continued on Buffumsville Road and was later spotted by Somersworth police on Indigo Hill Road and High Street traveling toward Dover, Somersworth police Capt. Russell Timmons said.

A New Hampshire State Trooper engaged the vehicle on Oak Street in Dover and continued following it onto Route 4 west into South Berwick. The chase continued into Berwick until the Camaro crashed near 66 Guinea Road at about 3:21 a.m.

There was nobody in the vehicle when police arrived at the crash scene.

“They brought in a canine and attempted to track them but never found them,” Lajoie said.

A Guinea Road resident told Foster’s he saw New Hampshire State Troopers and local police searching nearby woods with flashlights and rifles after the crash.

On Friday afternoon, a dispatcher at New Hampshire State Police Troop A barracks said the trooper who responded to the incident was not currently on duty. Nobody else in the office Friday afternoon was available to comment on the incident, she said.

Police have identified a potential suspect in the incident through the car registration, according to Berwick Police Capt. Jerry Locke.

The South Berwick police officer that engaged the vehicle saw the driver’s face at one point when the Camaro spun out, Lajoie said.

Once police confirm the driver’s identify, Lajoie said it’s likely he would be charged in South Berwick with eluding an officer.

Other charges from other municipalities also are possible.
