Power restored after accident knocks out service in Belfast area

By Abigail Curtis, BDN Staff

BELFAST, Maine — A traffic accident on Swan Lake Avenue Tuesday afternoon left more than 500 homes in the dark, according to a police dispatcher and the Central Maine Power outage website.

The accident happened a little before 4 p.m., according to a Waldo County communications center dispatcher. Although initial reports indicated that no one was injured, the dispatcher said that a vehicle hit a guy-wire that supported a utility pole. Police were waiting at 5 p.m. for utility crews to arrive at the scene, according to the dispatcher.

The Central Maine Power outage information website showed that 533 customers were without power at 5 p.m. in the communities of Belfast, Searsport and Swanville. That reflects less than 8 percent of the total customers in those three municipalities, according to CMP.

The power was restored as of about 6 p.m.
