ROCKLAND, Maine — The Rockland-area school system is losing another administrator.
James Leonard submitted his resignation last week from the athletics/activities director post for Regional School Unit 13.
Leonard has held the post since 2007, succeeding Daryle Weiss. Leonard said he has accepted the athletic director’s job at Maine Central Institute in Pittsfield.
The Rockland native said the job is another career opportunity, and he is excited to have his son attend Warsaw Middle School in Pittsfield.
Leonard’s imminent departure follows the resignation of Superintendent Lew Collins in February, Oceanside High School East Principal Tom Forti, and Oceanside West Principal Lawrence Schooley. RSU 13 Business Manager Scott Vaitones ’ final days on the job are this month after his contract was shortened and he was not renominated for the post.
Last week, the board authorized negotiations to hire Leon Levesque as its latest interim superintendent. Interim Superintendent Michael Wilhelm is working a few days a week during June until Levesque comes on board.
RSU 13 has a search committee reviewing eight applicants for the more long-term position of superintendent.
RSU 13 consists of Rockland, Thomaston, St. George, Owls Head, South Thomaston and Cushing. The district has slightly less than 2,000 students.
