PROSPECT, Maine — Police said Monday that an Ohio woman crossed the centerline of Route 1 on Saturday afternoon, narrowly missing a tractor-trailer and a car before crashing head-on into a van carrying four people.

The crash claimed two lives.

Denise Shuck, 44, of Sardinia, Ohio, was driving north on Route 1 about a mile south of the Penobscot Narrows Bridge when she veered into the southbound lane, according to Waldo County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Jeffery Trafton.

She narrowly missed a tractor-trailer heading south as well as another vehicle, both of which had to swerve to avoid her 1999 Dodge Intrepid sedan, Trafton said. The driver of a third vehicle, a 2009 Dodge van, driven by Sarah Thompson, 43, of Morrill, did not have time to avoid Shuck’s oncoming vehicle, he said.

Shuck died at the scene of the crash. A passenger in Thompson’s van, Frederick Carter, 65, of Morrill, died that evening at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.

Sarah Thompson and her two other passengers, Howard Thompson, 52, and Rebecca Carter, 63, both of Morrill, were taken to hospitals. The conditions of the Thompsons were not available Monday. Carter was listed in fair condition at EMMC.

Trafton said that a blood alcohol test was taken from Shuck as is routine in fatal crashes, but the results were not yet available. Shuck had a cellphone but it has not been determined whether that played a role in the crash. Trafton said that the accident remains under investigation.

All five people were wearing seat belts, Trafton said.

Members of the Prospect Fire Department, Bucksport Ambulance Service, Stockton Springs Fire Department and Waldo County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene. Deputies Kevin Littlefield and Benjamin Seekins responded to and investigated the crash. Deputy Dan Thompson and Deputy Jonathan Shaw assisted at the scene.
