STOCKTON SPRINGS, Maine — Two people died and three people were injured Saturday afternoon in a head-on collision on Route 1.
Denise Shuck, 44, died at the scene of the crash that occurred at 4:54 p.m. about one mile south of the Penobscot Narrows Bridge, according to a news release issued Sunday afternoon by the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office.
Her car collided head on with a southbound car carrying four people. One passenger in that vehicle, Frederick Carter, 65, died Saturday evening at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.
The driver of the second vehicle and two other passengers were taken to EMMC and Waldo County General Hospital in Belfast, according to police.
Sgt. James Greeley said Shuck was from out of state but did not want to identify her hometown and home state. He said Carter and the other occupants of that vehicle were from Maine, but their hometowns were not released Sunday.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation, he said when asked which vehicle crossed into the other lane.
The Waldo County Sheriff’s Office, Stockton Springs Fire and Ambulance, Prospect Fire Department and Bucksport Ambulance responded to the crash.
Deputies Kevin Littlefield and Benjamin Seekins responded to and investigated the crash. Deputy Dan Thompson and Deputy Jonathan Shaw assisted at the scene.
