On Memorial Day, my little family of three found ourselves fishing and enjoying the sunshine along the Kenduskeag Stream. The weather was absolutely gorgeous, just warm enough, and it felt like a promise of a good summer to come.

As we were leaving for lunch, I felt a strong urge to soak up the nostalgia a little while longer. I wanted burgers, fries and a shake — and from a drive-up diner. Kind of like the one directly across from a lake I remember frequenting during my childhood summers. The perfect pairing of a shake so thick you need a spoon, and delightfully crispy-on-the outside but soft-on-the-inside fries seemed like the only meal that could cap off such a day.

Unfortunately, being a relatively new Mainer, I knew of only one place — Nicky’s in Bangor, which is fabulous and fit the bill. But, it’s only one place. And, summer in my opinion, is for road trips and drive-up ice cream and burger shacks.

I just know there are stands out there with stories, memories of generations of families, unique ingredients and all around great food. Not only that, we have dozens of warm days spent fishing and dipping in Maine’s icy rivers and lakes ahead.

So, I need your help.

Where is your favorite burger shack? Think “ Diners, Drive-ins and Dives” type places. Worth-the-drive, family-friendly buildings with delicious fries, shakes and other goodies at a reasonable price.

We’ll hit up a few during the summer and feature them here. After all, what good is it to know about the best burger shack in town, but not share it with friends?

Send an email or call me with the name and location of your favorite diners and drive-ins and make sure to include why it’s worth a visit — nfeulner@bangordailynews.com or 990-8066.
