Messalonskee standout to play basketball for Husson men’s team

BANGOR, Maine — Jordan Holmes, a 6-foot guard from Messalonskee High School in Oakland, has committed to play men’s basketball for Husson University next fall, Husson men’s basketball coach Warren Caruso announced in a news release Friday.

Holmes helped lead Messalonskee to a 13-6 record and a No. 4 seed in the Eastern Maine Class A tourney last season while averaging 16.1 points, 3.3 assists and 2.4 steals per game.

“Jordan plays with good intensity and really gets after things. He is a lefty shooter who plays with a high motor,” Caruso said in the release.

Holmes was a first-team selection on the All-Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference team as a junior and was a second-team selection last season, when he also was named to the McDonald’s Senior All-Star Team.

He joins a recruiting class that includes center Connor Adams of Bangor, guard Aseim King from Waterbury, Connecticut, and guard David Diaz from Miami, Florida.

“We are excited about our incoming class. We think we still have a couple more pieces coming, and we will have a very good recruiting class,” Caruso said.

UMPI softball players gain all-star honors

University of Maine-Presque Isle seniors Brittany Luetjen and Krista Coffin and sophomore Taylor Cochran have been named to the Association of Division III Independents first team, while sophomores Shannon Brown, Katie Patenaude and Amanda Allen have been named to the second team.

Second baseman Luetjen of Hampden hit .307 for Owls and drove in 19 runs, while first baseman Coffin of Presque Isle recorded a .391 average and 15 RBIs. Utility player Cochran of Topsfield had a .289 average and 13 RBIs.

Brown, a third baseman from Calais, had a .290 average and 19 RBIs, while catcher Patenaude of Presque Isle notched a .345 average and 10 RBIs. Outfielder Allen of Limestone finished with a .306 average and 8 RBIs.

UMFK athletic director receives national award

University of Maine at Fort Kent Athletic Director Bill Ashby was recently named the 2013-14 Garth Pleasant Honorary Athletic Director of the Year at the United States Collegiate Athletic Association national convention held in Pittsburgh.

“Not only has Bill Ashby experienced tremendous success at UMFK as an administrator and coach, but he has also been an integral part of new membership acquisition and growth at the USCAA,” USCAA Chief Operating Officer Matthew Simms said in a news release. “We are proud to recognize Bill as the Garth Pleasant Athletic Director of the Year based on his long term contributions.”

Ashby has served at UMFK since 2006 as athletic director and men’s soccer coach.

The UMFK men’s soccer team has been to the national tourney for the last four years won the title in 2010 and won the title last year.

“It is a honor to be recognized for doing one’s job well, to be recognized by your peers is especially rewarding,” Ashby said. “This award speaks to the outstanding work performed by the athletic staff and the achievements of UMFK student-athletes.”
