SHERMAN, Maine— A Stacyville man has died after head injuries he sustained in an all-terrain vehicle accident in Sherman on Saturday evening.

Cpl. John MacDonald of the Maine Warden Service said Sunday that Bryon Jacobs, 38, was not wearing a helmet and suffered blunt trauma to the head when the crash took place on a trail west of Interstate 95, near mile 266.

According to MacDonald, Jacobs was operating a 2005 Can-Am Outlander 400 ATV with a 16-year-old male passenger from Stacyville. The teen passenger is not related to Jacobs.

Jacobs was traveling northeast on the trail at about 8:30 p.m. when MacDonald said initial evidence suggests the left front tire of the ATV may have fallen off, causing it to overturn.

The teenager called for help and the Patten ambulance responded. Jacobs was declared dead at the scene.

The 16-year-old was taken to Houlton Regional Hospital for treatment of a head injury but was talking with wardens when he was evaluated. The ATV will be inspected for possible contributing factors.

Jacobs’ body was released to Bower’s Funeral Home in Houlton.

Stacyville Fire Department and Maine State Police assisted.

The medical examiner’s office has been notified, as well as the Aroostook County District Attorney’s Office. This incident remains under investigation.
