Vernon Merrill Wood

BUCKS HARBOR – Vernon Merrill Wood, beloved husband, daddy and papa, passed away peacefully at his home in Bucks Harbor, May 26, 2014 after having spent the day surrounded by family and much love and laughter. Born March 27, 1930, first born son of Clarence and Ida Wood.
Vernon lived in Machiasport/Bucks Harbor for his entire life with the exception of the four years he was in the United States Air Force, serving in Korea and state-side in New York and Arizona.
Vernon is survived by his best friend and the love of his life for over 64 years, wife, Gwenie of Bucks Harbor; son, Paul Wood of Brunswick; daughter, Donna and husband, Lewis Michaud and son, Gary Wood and wife, Tammy, all of Bucks Harbor. He is also survived by the joys of his life, his grandchildren, Jennifer Atkinson and husband, Jim of Glenburn; Jason Atkinson and wife, Jessica of Orneville; Jamie and husband, Matt Long of New Hampshire; Kourtney Wood of England, Jordan Wood of Florida; Zachary Wood of West Gardiner; Nicholas Wood and wife, Laureta; Kayla Wood and fiancé, Nate Burke, Paul Michaud and Marc Michaud, all of Bucks Harbor and his great-grandchildren, Aliya Wood of West Gardiner; Aubrey and Brantley Wood of Bucks Harbor, Kambrea Atkinson and Triston Frost of Glenburn; Grady and Liam Atkinson of Orneville; and Sage Colson and Aspen Long of New Hampshire. He is also survived by his sisters, Dot Muzzy, Sharon Gately, and Jackie Pettegrow, all of Machiasport and sister, Joyce and her husband, Stanley Hooper of Florida; brothers, Algy and wife, Amy of Marshfield and Dennis and wife, Judy of Machias; sisters-in-law, Judy Gordon of Maryland, Joyce Meyer of Bucks Harbor and Jean Wood of Machiasport. He was predeceased by his parents, Clarence and Ida Wood; his father and mother-in-law, Carroll and Nonie Hooper; sister, Emma Holmes and special brother-in-law, Donald Holmes, and brothers, Nelson and Reginald Wood. He will also be missed by many special and close friends.
Vernon started driving a pulpwood truck at the age of 14 and never stopped working hard, supporting his family and earning a much deserved retirement at the age of 59 with the last 30 plus years of his career working construction and retiring as a job foreman. He was a proud 50 plus year member of Local 327. After retirement he and Gwenie traveled extensively throughout the eastern United States but always happily returning home to Bucks Harbor to the house they began building together in 1951, and their loving family.
A graveside service will be held at the Bucks Harbor Hillside Cemetery, 3 p.m. Friday, May 30th, followed by a reception for family and friends at the Larrabee Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Larrabee Baptist Church, c/o Betina Davis, P.O. Box 155, Machias, ME 04654 or simply make the effort to hug someone dear to you, one of the things that brought the most joy to our Papa.
