UNITY, Maine — A man accused of assaulting his wife last week by grabbing her around the neck until she felt she couldn’t breathe remained in jail Tuesday, according to the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office.

Jason Brewster, 31, of Unity came to the attention of police when the victim called for help at about 11:30 p.m. Friday, May 23, Chief Deputy Jeff Trafton said Tuesday. The woman told officials that Brewster was intoxicated when they began to argue.

“He’d been drinking very hard most of the night and she wanted to get to sleep. He just wanted to argue. He ended up getting physical with her,” Trafton said.

The woman told police that Brewster had punched her, then choked her. Police arrested him and charged him with aggravated domestic violence assault. They also learned that the victim was wanted on outstanding warrants for failure to pay fines, and arrested her, too. Brewster was taken to Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset and the woman, whom the BDN is not naming because she allegedly is the victim of a domestic violence crime, was initially taken to Waldo County Jail in Belfast.

Later, she was taken to Two Bridges Regional Jail, where officials arranged for the couple to be kept in separate areas, Trafton said. They are scheduled to be arraigned on Wednesday.
