NEWBURGH – Ruth Modesta DeFeo, 79, wife of Anthony DeFeo, passed away peacefully May 21, 2014 at her home in Newburgh. She was born in Malden, Massachusetts, July 29, 1934, the daughter of William and Cecelia Fitzgerald.
Ruth was affectionately known as “Gibby”. She graduated from Girls Catholic High School, Malden, Mass., in 1952, and the School of Practical Art in 1955. She worked as a commercial artist before becoming a stay at home mother. Ruth was a very talented and creative person who worked as an artist, sculptor, piano player, storywriter and seamstress as well as many other creative endeavors. She also held painting classes for children and adults alike. Ruth was a very active and faith filled communicant at St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church, Winterport where she sang in the choir and was a Eucharistic minister.
She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Anthony DeFeo, three children, Anthony DeFeo and his wife, Sheree of Hudson, NH, Andrea DeFeo of Nashua, NH, Christine DeFeo of Newburgh and seven grandchildren, three sisters, Cecelia Drever of Gilford, NH, Wilma Pappalado of Yarmouth, MA, and a brother, William Fitzgerald of FL., three sisters-in-law, four brothers-in-law and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents she was predeceased by two sisters, Ann Freeman of Pittston, and Gertrude Fitzgerald of Medford, MA. Ruth was very committed to her family and will be greatly missed by all who know and loved her.
Family and friends are invited to visit 3-5 p.m. Sunday, May 25, 2014 at Hampden-Gilpatrick Funeral Home, 45 Western Avenue, Hampden. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Monday, May 26, 2014 at St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church, St. Paul The Apostle Parish, Main Street, Winterport. Private interment will be in Brookside Cemetery, Newburgh, at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorial gifts may be made to Landmark Heritage Trust, C/O Carol Cuddy, Treasurer, P.O.
