PORTLAND, Maine — A convicted sex offender from Lewiston has been sentenced to 20 years in federal prison for transporting child pornography, according to the U.S. attorney’s office.

Fredrick W. Butler Jr., 44, pleaded guilty to the charge in December.

In addition to prison time, U.S. District Judge Nancy Torresen on Thursday sentenced Butler to a lifetime of supervised release after he completes his prison term.

Butler is required to register for life on the Maine Sex Offender Registry because of two convictions for gross sexual assault in Maine and one conviction in federal court in Portland in 2001 for knowingly receiving child pornography.

He was convicted in 1995 in state court on charges the he sexually assaulted two boys, age 8 and 12, according to documents filed in federal court in Portland. Butler was sentenced to eight years with all but four suspended and a term of probation. He violated his probation twice, court documents said.

In 2001, Butler was sentenced to 6 1/2 years in federal prison followed by five years of supervised release by U.S. District Court Judge D. Brock Hornby, according to information posted on the federal court’s electronic case filing system. During his supervised release, Butler was ordered to wear an electronic ankle bracelet and was confined to his home, according to court documents.

Butler had been off supervised release for two months when, in April 2013, he shared child pornography, according to court documents. Butler sent an email message to an individual in Oregon attaching 19 images, most of which depicted minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct, according to the U.S. attorney’s office.

He had been held without bail since his arrest in November.

Butler faced between 15 and 40 years in federal prison because of his previous convictions for sex crimes and a fine of up to $250,000.
