FRYEBURG, Maine — A Fryeburg man faces a domestic violence assault charge for what police are describing as a brutal attack on his girlfriend.

Nathan Smith, 29, was arrested early Thursday morning at a friend’s house after a two-day police search. Police say the attack at 11 Smith St. put the girlfriend in the hospital, where she was treated and later released. Smith was taken to the Oxford County Jail. He is out on $1,500 bail.

Acting police Chief Joshua Potvin said his department has seen an increase in domestic violence in Fryeburg and it is a top priority to bring offenders to justice and protect and support victims. Potvin said the department is planning a domestic violence training session for officers next month.
