Southern Maine baseball team advances to final round in NCAA Regional

HARWICH, Mass. — The Southern Maine Huskies continued their march through an NCAA Division III Regional Tourney with an 8-4 baseball victory over Endicott College Friday.

The Huskies advanced to a 4 p.m. Saturday championship-round game. USM will play the winner of Saturday’s first game between MIT and Endicott.

That winner must beat USM twice to claim the regional title, with the if-necessary game set for noon Sunday.

Tyler Leavitt and Andrew Richards combined to scatter 14 hits over nine innings to give the Huskies (34-12) the victory on Friday. Leavitt earned the win and improved to 8-3 while Richards notched his seventh save.

Matt Verrier recorded a home run, double and single to spark the offense while Sam Dexter (RBI) and Chris Bernard each added two hits. John Carey, Jake Glauser and Forrest Chadwick each drove in a run.

Saint Joseph’s stayed alive in the tourney with a 9-2 elimination-game win over Mitchell earlier in the day, but fell to MIT 4-3 in the nightcap, ending the Monks’ tourney run.

St. Joseph’s 9, Mitchell 2

At Harwich, Mass., Alex Lorenc recorded a home run, double, single and three RBIs to lead Saint Joseph’s by Mitchell in an NCAA Division III elimination-round game.

The Monks also received a strong effort from senior starting pitcher Joe Gruntkosky (6-0), who provided them with their third strong start in as many days with six strikeouts and two runs allowed off 12 hits in 7 ⅔ innings. Left-hander Dan Meeken and Tyler Neville combined to close out the contest with 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.

St. Joe’s broke through with a run off two hits in the top of the fourth. Lorenc led off the inning with an unconventional double — a line drive up the middle that ricocheted off second base and over the head of Mitchell senior shortstop Marc Dorsi — and later scored on a sacrifice fly to left by Taylor Reuillard.

The Monks padded their lead with two runs off five hits in their next turn.

Saint Joseph’s registered 17 total hits and featured six repeat-hitters in the victory. Taylor Black went 3 for 4 with two runs scored, Taylor Reuillard was 2 for 3 with a run and an RBI, Nic Lops added a pair of hits and two RBI in five at bats, and Louie Vigars and Alex Markakis both produced two hits apiece.
