BANGOR, Maine — Husson University golf coach Ed Meo has stepped down after five seasons, the school announced in a news release Thursday.
“Unfortunately, after five years of coaching golf at Husson, I need to leave my position as head golf coach. I have been trying to juggle my career and coaching for a few years and am no longer able to do both,” Meo said in the release. “It has been an honor to coach for Husson University and a privilege to coach some great student-athletes and fine young men.”
Meo competed on the 2008-09 Husson golf team that won a North Atlantic Conference title and competed in the NCAA Division III Tourney. He took over coaching the team the next season and led the Eagles to five consecutive NAC titles and berths in the NCAA Tourney.
He was named league coach of the year in 2012 and 2013.
“We are grateful to Ed for his many years of outstanding service to Husson University and to the golf program,” Husson Director of Athletics Frank Pergolizzi said. “Husson golf under Ed Meo’s leadership has established an unprecedented level of excellence and success. We wish him the very best in his new endeavors.”
Meo’s team finished 27th out of 41 teams in the NCAA Division III Tourney Wednesday with a two-day total of 621 at the Grandover Resort in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Greg Martin of Ellsworth was Husson’s top finisher on both days and stood tied for 41st overall in the field of 210 competitors. He shot a 4-over par 76 on the first day and a 72 in the second round for a 148 today.
Lance Bernier of Lincoln was the second Husson finisher at 80-75-155 and was followed by Bill Hutchins of Hampden (82-75-157), Greg Pike (83-78-161) and Porter Gervais of New Limerick (86-85-171).
