NEWPORT, Maine — Police are searching for a man who took a chain saw valued at $900 from a local hardware store on Tuesday afternoon.

Newport Police Chief Leonard Macdaid said Wednesday that at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, a man came into Husqvarna Chainsaws on Moosehead Trail and browsed the store for about 15 minutes before heading back outside.

When the man noticed a store employee talking to another customer, he pretended to be on the phone while heading back inside, going to the rear of the store where the most expensive chain saws are located, according to Macdaid.

The man grabbed a chain saw, walked out of the store and got into a vehicle Macdaid described as a silver Dodge Neon with no license plates.

The suspect is a white man standing between 5 foot, 5 inches and 5 foot, 7 inches tall, weighing 120 pounds with a slender build, Macdaid said. He has dark hair and was wearing jeans, sneakers and a plaid button-down shirt.

Anybody with information on the robbery or the suspect’s whereabouts should call Newport police at 368-3263.
