Slashed tires, threat found at sporting camp prompt $500 reward offer

By Nick Sambides Jr., BDN Staff

TOWNSHIP 8 RANGE 9, Maine — A landowners’ coalition is offering a $500 reward for information regarding the slashing of tires on three vehicles at a sporting camp near Millinocket Lake, Maine Forest Ranger Steve Wipperman said Tuesday.

Wipperman said that several law enforcement agencies “have been notified to keep their eyes open. They are trying to [check] that location on their patrols that much more,” he said. “We want to catch whoever is responsible.”

The vandalism occurred while the vehicles were parked near the sporting camps known as Libby’s Camps in Township 8 and Township 7 of Range 9 near the lake sometime between Dec. 31 and March 3, Wipperman said. It was reported March 10.

Two of the three vehicles had to be towed out of the woods. A third was driven out by its owner, who was unaware at the time that the punctures were deliberate, Wipperman said.

An implied threat of a sporting camp being burned down also was discovered in the area, Wipperman said. He declined to say exactly how the threat was worded or how it had been left, and said police are trying to determine what motivated the vandalism and threats.

The cost of repairing the damage done and the towing exceeds $3,000, Wipperman said.

The reward, Wipperman said, will come only for information that leads to a grand jury indictment of those responsible. The charge suspects would face likely would be aggravated criminal mischief, a felony that a grand jury must approve of in this circumstance, he said.

Anyone with information can call Wipperman, who works for the Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry, at 712-8007.

The coalition of landowners of known as North Maine Woods and was formed to help landowners regulate recreational activities on their properties, Wipperman said.
