BROOKS, Maine — A local man was arrested Sunday after he allegedly got into a physical fight with a woman who was trying to change a newborn baby’s diaper.
Kerston Lane, 37, was charged with domestic violence assault and endangering the welfare of a child, according to Chief Deputy Jeff Trafton of the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office.
A woman who was at the Pine Drive home called dispatch at 8:38 p.m. to report that Lane and his female partner were “physically fighting,” Trafton said Monday, and were in close proximity to the baby. At least one other child was apparently in the house, too.
“She became concerned. She took the kids and left,” Trafton said.
Police sent two units to the home to see what was happening.
“It was a confusing situation, as they usually are. But it was determined that Mr. Lane was the primary aggressor. He was arrested and taken into custody,” Trafton said.
According to the police report, some of the fighting happened outside in the driveway. Then they stopped fighting and went back inside the home, where at some point while the woman was changing the child’s diaper in the bedroom, the fight began again.
“Allegedly, they were fighting over drugs,” Trafton said.
Lane was brought to Waldo County Jail in Belfast to be booked, and was released later Sunday night on $500 cash bail. He is scheduled to appear at Fifth District Court in Belfast on Tuesday, June 3.
