Sanford man accused of assaulting infant twins

SANFORD, Maine — A 21-year-old local man is facing a felony charge after allegedly assaulting his infant twins, police said.

Anthony Carpinelli is being held without bail at the York County Jail on an aggravated assault charge, Sanford Detective Cpl. Sarah Roberts said.

Police had launched their investigation on Friday after the twins were brought to the Southern Maine Health Care emergency department with serious injuries from inflicted head trauma, Roberts said.

The children subsequently were taken to Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital.

An investigation revealed that Carpinelli, the twins’ father, was taking care of the infants when the injuries were suffered and he inflicted the injuries intentionally, Roberts said.

One infant suffered serious injuries and the other critical injuries, Roberts said.

Police arrested and charged Carpinelli on Monday.
