CASTINE, Maine — A dormitory at Maine Maritime Academy was evacuated at about 5 p.m. Tuesday after a suspicious package was found in a student’s room during the routine check of a room being vacated for summer.

The suspicious package was examined by an emergency response team, spokeswoman Jennifer DeJoy said. Members of the Maine State Police and the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office secured the package, she said, and a K-9 unit was sent to sweep the area as an extra precaution.

By 11:15 p.m., police determined it would be safe for students to return to Curtis Hall, which accommodates about 600 students, DeJoy said. She said students were temporarily put up in the campus student center and the gym.

DeJoy said the matter remains under investigation.
