Husson pitchers shut down Thomas in sweep

BANGOR, Maine — Amanda Ryan pitched a one-hitter in the opener and Kayla Merrill fired an eight-hit shutout on Friday as Husson University swept a North Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader from Thomas College at O’Keefe Field.

Ryan spaced four hits, struck out five and walked one in a 5-1 win, then Merrill fanned four and did not walk anyone in a 5-0 decision.

In the opener, Haley Spiers and Sami Schultz each posted a double and a single with an RBI to pace the Eagles’ offense. Spiers had a run-scoring double and Nicole Andrade provided an RBI single during a three-run second inning for Husson (23-9, 11-2 NAC).

Taylor Bergeron singled twice for Thomas College of Waterville (12-14-1, 5-6-1 NAC) to back losing pitcher Kelsey Crowe.

In Game 2, Chelsea Brennan’s two-run home run in the third inning gave Husson some breathing room. Schultz and Spiers each stroked a double and a single and Breanna Martin had two singles and an RBI. Christine Conners jacked a solo homer.

Ashlee Quirrion had two singles and Courtney Veilleux doubled for the Terriers.

Baseball

USM sweeps Keene State

At Keene, N.H., the Huskies piled up 28 hits en route to a Little East Conference sweep of Keene State.

Southern Maine of Gorham won the first game 13-1 in seven innings and took the second game 8-3.

In the opener, Tyler Leavitt pitched 6⅓ innings of two-hit ball and received plenty of support. Sam Dexter homered, doubled and added two singles with two RBIs for the winners (26-8, 11-1 LEC).

Paul McDonough (2 singles), John Carey (home run, single) and Matt Verrier (double) drove in two runs apiece. Nick DiBiase hit a double and two singles and Troy Thibodeau added two singles.

In Game 2, Verrier knocked in five runs with a home run, two doubles and a single to propel USM. Thibodeau and Paul McDonough each stroked two singles and Andrew Richards pitched 4⅓ innings of two-hit, scoreless relief.

Joe Libby sparked Keene State (8-18, 2-10 LEC) with a double, a single and an RBI. Matt Boulay singled twice and drove in a run.
