DEXTER, Maine — Quick response from firefighters from four communities helped stop a fire Friday from spreading throughout Dexter Variety on Spring Street.

Dexter Fire Chief Matt Connor said the fire began shortly after 5 p.m., in the ceiling above a walk-in cooler. The fire was extinguished before it could make its way into the walls.

Connor said that the State Fire Marshal’s Office has been asked to investigation the fire’s cause.

“We’re leaning toward electrical,” he said.

Connor said the store was open at the time and that no injuries were reported. Although he did not have a dollar estimate for damage, Connor said it is likely that food items will have to be thrown out.

Spring Street was temporarily shut down from Rite Aid down, while crews battled the blaze.

Firefighters from Dexter were assisted by their counterparts from Corinna, Sangerville and Garland.
