Officials probe fire that destroyed lobster boat in Stonington

By Ryan McLaughlin, BDN Staff

STONINGTON, Maine — Officials are investigating a fire that destroyed a lobster boat in Hancock County on Wednesday night.

Stonington Fire Chief Ryan Hayward said crews were called to the scene off Seabreeze Avenue around 8:30 p.m.

The boat was on a mooring in the harbor, and a Stonington firefighter had a boat to get crews to the burning vessel, Hayward said.

The lobster boat was fully engulfed in flames by the time crews arrived, Hayward said. Nobody was aboard the vessel at the time of the fire.

It took firefighters from Deer Isle and Stonington about an hour to get the blaze under control and tow the boat to the docks, Hayward said. The Marine Patrol and Coast Guard responded as well.

A cause has not been determined and the state fire marshal’s office was expected to investigate Thursday.
